Old Trapper Retsu
Old Trapper Retsu connects two Firstlight schematic routes. At night, find him south of the Mother Bear area and ask about the lantern on his belt to start the Mushroom Lit Lantern route toward the Firstlight Tanto Schematic. The Firstlight War Fans hunt also sends you to Retsu after Dockmaster Sofen's clue; continue that quest's dialogue before returning to Winter Store Rep Lynx.

Find Retsu on the snowy approach
For the lantern route, travel toward the Mother Bear area after dark and search south of it for Old Trapper Retsu. Open his dialogue and choose the line about the lantern on his belt. Read the current Wen request before accepting.
The War Fans clue chain approaches Retsu from Frostveil Shrine toward the Mother Bear side. Follow the active quest marker and speak with him after Shiori and Dockmaster Sofen have pointed you onward.
Follow the Mushroom Lit Lantern clue
The lantern reveals the trail; the Shovel opens the final dig. Keep both items ready before leaving the cave. The dig awards a schematic, so take the drawing to the relevant forge when you are ready to inspect crafting requirements.
- Speak with Retsu at night about the lantern on his belt.
- Unequip any regular lantern before entering the dark cave beyond his area.
- Touch the glowing mushrooms until their particles appear, then collect Mushroom Lit Lantern deeper inside.
- Equip the new lantern outside to reveal blue footprints.
- Follow the trail with a Shovel in Inventory and dig the indicated snow to collect the Firstlight Tanto Schematic.
Use Retsu's dialogue in the Firstlight War Fans hunt
The War Fans route begins with Shiro's Iceveil supply stage and a Shovel. Follow the clue from Shiori to Dockmaster Sofen, then visit Retsu. Read his current dialogue and any displayed cost before continuing; do not use the lantern clue as a substitute for this quest step.
After Retsu, revisit Winter Store Rep Lynx and ask about the woman with wrapped hands. Follow the remaining clue toward the last house near Doma, then use the Shovel at the snow dig.
If Retsu's clue does not advance
Check the time of day for the lantern conversation. For the War Fans chain, inspect your current objective and complete the preceding Shiori and Sofen conversations before expecting Retsu's next clue.
If you already hold Mushroom Lit Lantern but see no blue footprints, equip it rather than carrying it only in Inventory. If you reach the final patch but cannot dig, check for a Shovel.
